Antacids, Altered Mental Status, and Milk-Alkali Syndrome
The frequency of milk-alkali syndrome decreased rapidly after the development of histamine-2 antagonists and proton pump inhibitors for the treatment of peptic ulcer disease; however, the availability and overconsumption of antacids and calcium supplements can still place patients at risk (D. P. Beall et al., 2006). Here we describe a patient who presented with altered mental status, hypercalce...
متن کاملStatus epilepticus secondary to milk-alkali syndrome induced by hypercalcemia (oral antacids)
Milk-alkali syndrome is mainly caused by the ingestion of large amounts of calcium and absorbable alkali. This syndrome can lead to metastatic calcification, renal failure and metabolic alkalosis secondary to hypercalcemia. Hypercalcemia is rarely a cause of seizure activity. Very few case reports have been published linking seizure to hypercalcemia, but only one recent case report about mesial...
متن کاملMilk alkali syndrome.
The milk alkali syndrome was more commonly seen when milk and absorbable alkalis were the mainstays of treatment of symptoms due to acidrelated upper gastro-intestinal disease. The syndrome became rarer after the introduction of the non-absorbable alkalis and H2 receptor antagonists but it did not disappear altogether and should always be suspected when patients present with hypercalcaemia, ren...
متن کاملAltered Mental Status
Although the majority of alterations in sensorium in cancer patients are caused by endogenous or exogenous intoxication, the clinician must be alert to the possibility of structural disease in any patient who experiences a change in mental status. Accurate diagnosis of structural disease and prompt intervention can significantly improve the outcome of cancer treatments. Mogami et al. (1983) not...
متن کاملRenal biopsy in the milk-alkali syndrome.
In milk-alkali syndrome the degree of renal impairment varies greatly. Few reports have been published describing structural changes on renal biopsy. In three illustrative cases, impairment of renal function was related to morphological changes shown on percutaneous biopsy. Milk-alkali syndrome should be considered as a cause of renal dysfunction in patients with a long history of dyspensia.
